TASK – YEOMAN FARMERS: You are small-holding farmers who are particularly numerous in the Middle Colonies
?Prompt: It is now a quarter-century down the road from your youth, you are now well into your middle-aged years, with idealistic children, and a grandchild or two, of your own. You and your generation have sacrificed much to bring about the United States and its new government under the Constitution. President George Washington’s Administration is in place, Congress has been elected, and the form of the new government is taking shape. Are you satisfied with the new government under the recently ratified Constitution? Do you think your 20-something year old self (the protester from the 1760s) would be happy with the way things turned out? You have decided to write a treatise (a fancy word for an essay) upon this subject. In it you will be considering your early political, economic, and social positions in relation to your current beliefs. Have things turned out well for you and your group? Have your grievances from the 1760s been redressed (or are no longer relevant)? Would your 1760s self believe that you held onto your ethics even as war raged around you? Has your group met their social responsibilities to the new nation, have they compromised where needed for the greater good or selfishly looked after their own interests? What, if anything, is left to be done for your group??This essay should be a minimum of 5 paragraphs long. The first paragraph is your introduction with thesis statement. The second through fourth paragraphs (the body) will discuss social, economic, and political reforms (you should organize in this way, minimum of one paragraph on economic, one paragraph on social, and one on political). Each paragraph of the body must have its own thesis statement and there should be at least three pieces of evidence (properly cited in Turabian) in support (the “rule of three” for analytical writing). The last paragraph is the conclusion.?You will be using Turabian FOOTNOTES in this assignment. You must provide the full footnote, including locating information, for each of your three pieces of evidence per body paragraph (so a minimum of 9 footnotes).??
Guidelines ??Your paper will need to meet the following guidelines:
• 2-3 pages in length (minimum of 5 paragraphs, see comments above). No cover page. There is no specific deduction for length, but writing too much or too little will likely make your writing too vague or too wordy.
• Double spaced, 1 inch margins, 12 pt type
• Spelling, grammar, organization, and logic count. Make sure you review the Writing Guide in Student Resources for more information.
• FULL Turabian footnotes needed for each piece of evidence you are using in your essay. Must include page numbers or other identifying locational information. We will check your footnotes.
• DO NOT use any information from outside of the course materials (found to the left) – all information you need to write this essay is in the course materials.
• In answering your question, we expect you to use information you learned in the secondary materials (like the text, lectures, and documentary), Rowlandson, and primary documents (this is an open book assignment.
• Anyone using outside materials will be penalized 2 letter grades
??
Rules for Utilizing Assigned Materials ?
• DO NOT directly quote secondary source materials (like the textbook). We want to know what you have to say, not what the textbook authors had to say.
• You MAY quote BRIEFLY from a primary source document (a document written at the time), but only if you are immediately ANALYZING the quote. If you are using it as FILLER, to say something you should have put into your own words, you will lose points since this is not critical thinking.
• You will lose points if you quote secondary materials or use any primary quotations as fillers.
• You must use Turabian style FOOTNOTES for all pieces of evidence.
Note: if you use outside materials you will receive a two letter grade deduction. If closely paraphrase or quote outside materials and fail to properly cite (full bibliographic citations and footnote cite) then you will receive a 0 for the assignment and your paper will be forwarded to the Office of Student Conduct as a case of plagiarism. We are serious about this.?
