Introduction
A podcast is a series of digital media files, either audio or video, that is released episodically and
downloaded through web syndication. The mode of delivery is what differentiates podcasts from
other ways of accessing media files over the Internet, such as simple download or streamed
webcasts: special client software applications known as podcatchers (like iTunes, Zune, Juice or
Winamp) are used to automatically identify and download new files in the series when they are
released, by accessing a centrally-maintained web feed that lists all files currently associated
with that particular series. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podcast)
Refer to the tutorial under reading materials for a tutorial on how to create a Podcast.
Create Your Own Podcast
1. Record your audio and save it as an mp3 file using audacity (this is done in your
“audacity” homework).
2. Create an RSS file which holds the “directions” for sending your file when a
user’s program like RSSOwl requests it.
3. Upload your RSS and mp3 files to http://pen.eiu.edu using secure FTP (instructions are
posted in the learning materials). When connecting to the server, the username and
password are the same as your panther email account. After login, you will see a www
folder (a few people may see http folder). Upload your files to that folder. The URL
for your RSS file will be http://pen.eiu.edu/~your_username/your_rssfile (Replace
your_username and your_rssfile with your own user name and RSS file name).
Submit
Submit a zip file (yourname.zip) to D2L containing the following files:
1. RSS file
2. mp3 file
3. A Word or Notepad document including the URL of your Podcast. You may add any
additional information related to your Podcast. Your Podcast link will be shared to the
class.
