Sample Positioning Statement
CSYE Student

Hi. My name is Mei Zheng. I am a software engineer with one year of work
experience in China. Currently I am computer systems graduate student with a
commitment to developing innovative and creative systems solutions. I am
particularly interested in the field of Healthcare related information and
applications. I have designed my own application to aid a doctor’s office in billing
clients more efficiently. I have a strong background in computer science and
management, and a proven track record using the full software development
cycle, including initial design, testing and technical support of the finished
product. My areas of expertise include Software design & testing, Java, C++, SQL
Server, ASP.NET, Javascript, and Linux.

For the next phase of my career I am interested in a software position with a fast-
paced company in healthcare or other services. Ideally the company would offer
training and possibly mentoring to help me learn and grow.

Do you have any suggestions for what areas I should explore, or how I might
prepare for a job at your company, what types of jobs may become available, or
anyone you might suggest that I should speak with?

39

Exercise
• Write a draft of your positioning statement. Work

individually.

• Think about how to best present yourself and your
accomplishments to an employer or while
networking.

• When finished, work with a teammate and present
out loud; get feedback and brainstorm ideas to
improve your statement.
