Assignment for The American We Live in-A View from 30,000 feet
1. Read any two chapters from the book (chapters 2-8).
2. Prepare a brief presentation for the class covering the following points:
a. Select one trend or condition that is covered from each of the two
chapters, that you have a concern about or an interest in.
b. Discuss how these two trends or conditions affect you as college
graduate entering the workforce and beginning your adult life in
America.
c. Discuss what actions you can take to deal with these trends or
conditions.
d. How has this course helped you to better prepare for your career.
As an example, in Chapter 6-Our Work, the projections are that there will be
many jobs lost and/or changed due to continuing automation, and the
continuing development of artificial intelligence. This includes not only manual
labor jobs, but also knowledge worker jobs such as legal research, accounting,
and many others.
This trend will limit the future growth in the number of jobs in many professions, as
well as change their nature. On the other hand the number of jobs in technical
fields will increase such as computer science, math and engineering. As a result,
you might consider more moving into more technical career fields; and
continue on a path of lifetime learning, so that as jobs change, you are better
prepared to adopt to them.
