W.E.B. Du Bois
The ever-present onslaught of political ideology is drowning out more significant and substantial approaches to understanding truth and goodness in human life to such an extant that the average American’s worldview has become a cartoon caricature of thought and reason. To that end, for paper 2, we will be finding and discussing philosopher mentors to help us develop how our minds respond to the problems and ideas that we encounter in our lives and as a part of society. A “philosopher mentor” is a thinker whose ideas have left a substantial impression on how thought has developed. They may not necessarily use the title “philosopher” as this is a relatively new title, but they are someone who has thought about the deeper mysteries of human existence, whose ideas have influenced culture and civilization. Furthermore, their ideas have been published as a significant and complex text or a series of essays.Identify a philosopher mentor and select at least one text by them and at least one text about their ideas. These texts should be significant and academic in nature. Ask for help from me if you are having trouble or doubts about your texts. The library’s online resources will be your central source for texts; any texts not found through the library will need to be accepted by me. Finally, write a five to six-page essay teaching your audience about your mentor and explaining how their ideas will help you understand modern life better. Please use his book “Black Reconstruction” as a source for ideas.
