Green With Envy

Jealously is one of the strongest human emotions. It takes a life of its own, clouds ones judgment, ability to think clearly and destroys true potential of the relationship. As Shakespeare says in his masterpiece Othello “As, I confess, it is my nature’s plague To spy into abuses, and oft my jealousy Shapes faults that are not”, meaning I have a bad tendency to be suspicious of people and to look too closely into what they’re doing. Often I imagine crimes that aren’t really there. Jealousy can destroy love, relationships and trust. Jealousy is an agonizing feeling usually caused by the fear of losing someone or something. It makes one insecure and envious. (needs to be paraphrased)

Act 3 Scene 3 line 335

I will in Cassio’s lodging lose this napkin
And let him find it. Trifles light as air

Are to the jealous confirmations strong

As proofs of holy writ. This may do something.
The Moor already changes with my poison.
Dangerous conceits are in their natures poisons
Which at the first are scarce found to distaste,
But with a little act upon the blood
Burn like the mines of sulfur.

I’ll leave this handkerchief at Cassio’s house and let him find it.To a jealous man, a meaningless little thing like this looks like absolute proof. This handkerchief may be useful to me. The Moor’s mind has already become infected with my poisonous suggestions. Ideas can be like poisons. At first they hardly even taste bad, but once they get into your blood they start burning like hot lava.

3.3.170

O, beware, my lord, of jealousy;
It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock
The meat it feeds on; that cuckold lives in bliss
Who, certain of his fate, loves not his wronger.

Beware of jealousy, my lord! It’s a green-eyed monster that makes fun of the victims it devours. The man who knows his wife is cheating on him is happy, because at least he isn’t friends with the man she’s sleeping with

3.3.150

As, I confess, it is my nature’s plague
To spy into abuses, and oft my jealousy
Shapes faults that are not.

. I have a bad tendency to be suspicious of people and to look too closely into what they’re doing. Often I imagine crimes that aren’t really there

2, 1, 220

For that I do suspect the lusty Moor
Hath leaped into my seat. The thought whereof
Doth, like a poisonous mineral, gnaw my inwards,
And nothing can or shall content my soul
Till I am evened with him, wife for wife.
Or, failing so, yet that I put the Moor
At least into a jealousy so strong
That judgment cannot cure.
