Create a Current Event Report and Link to MAINE SOCIAL STUDIES STANDARDS.
your assignments this semester is to complete CURRENT EVENTS REPORTS. Each student is assigned to present a summary of an appropriate local, state (provincial), national or international news item that might be used to teach social studies education at the elementary school level. Please provide your classmates with the articles/news you will be using. Students are encouraged to use newspapers, current news magazines or the Internet as sources. In the reports students should briefly summarize the current event that they select, provide classmates background information (e.g., what my classmates should know about that event and what kinds of issues relate to that event), and indicate how this current event could be used to teach social studies (how do I help my students talk about and learn from this current event? or How might the discussion of this event help facilitate social studies education?).
All Current Events reports should also identify those of the Maine Learning Results met by the Current Events’ content.
ALL TOPICS YOU DECIDE TO CHOOSE HAVE TO BE TIED TO THE MAINE LEARNING RESULTS (WHICH HAVE TO BE IDENTIFIED IN YOUR ASSIGNMENT)
Let me bring to your attention a few sources, from the US and from Canada. I hope that you will find them useful, one way or the other:
